Legitimate paid-advertising programs exist, but they recruit through their own applications and never pay upfront by check. The unsolicited "we'll mail you a check — deposit it and pay the installer" offer is a well-documented fake-check scam: the check bounces after you've sent away real money. If you didn't apply for a program, the offer isn't real.
